Kanadimadom Vishnumaya Chathanswamy temple is an ancient temple situated in Kanadimadom tharavadu in Peringottukara, Thrissur District. According to the legend Vishnumaya Chathanswamy is the son of Lord Shiva and Devi Parvathy, but looked after by Koolivaka, a beautiful woman who lived in the forest and a disciple of Lord Shiva. Chathanswamy became a warrior and he used to travel on a bison. Once he decided to meet Lord Shiva. To enter into Lord’s place, Chathanswamy disguised himself as Lord Vishnu, a friend of Lord Shiva; so the guards easily admitted him to see the Lord, Shiva. But Shiva recognized his son.

Since he appeared as Lord Vishnu, Shiva blessed and announced that ‘Chathanswamy’ will also be known as ‘Vishnu Maya’. Lord Shiva also remind him about the purpose of his birth to destroy the Asura king(evil force) Brungan. Lord Shiva blessed him success and gifted two ‘kuruvadi’ (short stick used as a weapon in Kalarippayattu) as a weapon against Brungan. During the fight with Brungan, every drop of blood coming out from Lord Vishnu Maya Chathanswamy transformed into Kuttichathan, the Dwarf warriors and there produced a total of 400 Kuttichathans. But 10 of the Kuttichathans vanished in a brave attempt to save their Lord, Vishnu Maya Chathanswamy from the magical arrows of Brungan. Finally, Lord Vishnu Maya Chathanswamy killed the Asura king using the short sticks. After his mission, he lived in earth to look after the welfare of his devotees and to suppress the evil forces.

There is a story behind the establishment of this temple in Kanadimadom tharavadu. In Kanadi family once lived a great scholar and warrior named Konnappan, who decided to increase his divine strength by pleasing Lord Vishnu Maya Chathanswamy. Through vigorous fast and pray, the Lord appeared before him, gave him blessings and agreed to be their family diety. Konnappan installed the Lord infront of his tharavadu along with the remaining 390 Kuttichathans. He also installed other forces - Bhuvaneswari, Karimkali, Vanamala, Brahmarakshass and the Gods Vishnu and Ganapathy in the same compound as subsidiary deities.
