Perumkaliyaattom at Poonthuruthi Sree Muchilottu Bhagavathi
Kshethram
Theyyams are the age-old ritualistic folk art of North Malabar(the
extreme north of Kerala). The festival is generally called as
kaliyaattom and is held annually. There is a story behind every
Theyyam (God/Goddess) and usually the festival rituals also
go through that sequence. and most of the Theyyams are performed
during late night.Perumkaliyaattom is a mega event of Theyyams.
As it is very expensive Perumkalyaattom-s are conducted very
rarely. Thousands of people will gather for this event and the
authorities provide free meals as a part of ritual to everyone
who visits. By tradition, Kaliyaatom and Perumkaliyaattom involves
the participation of various communities and the public. Hence
this mega festival is not only a religious ritualistic performance
handed over through generations, but observed as an event to
maintain communal harmony. During season you can see the performances
of theyyams in everyday in any of the nearby Kavu in these area.

21-28/March/2006: Thrikkandiyur Ambalakkulangara
Bhagavathy Kavu
Thalappoliyum Thiriuzhichilum Pattum
| The grand
festival held rarely at Ambalakkulangara Bhagavathy Kavu,
Thrikkandiyur, in Malappuram district. Till the recent
past, this temple was a typical sacred grove with huge
trees and some granite oil lamps. The main function of
the festival is Kalampattu, which is found to be common
in all parts of Kerala. In a typical Kalampattu, figure
of the deity is a drawn using natural powder and folk
songs, called Thottam are sung. After the oracles performance,
the performer rubs off the figure dramatically and the
powders are given to the devotees as divine offering.
Within 4/5hours all these rituals come to an end. This
ritual is performed for the Goddess Bhagavathy and the
Gods Sasthavu, Vettakyorumakan, VishnuMaya, Snake gods
etc. |
 |
 |
 |
But
in this Kavu there are some specialities for the ritual.
As in the case of Kalampattu, the main functions are in
the evening, but instead of deity's figure, geometrical
figures are drawn in a temporary Sanctorum made of bamboos
and coconut tree leaves. The main poles of the Sactorum
and the surrounding structure are made of 'Pala' (Astonia
scolaris). After elaborate pooja, Thalappoli is conducted
by mid night. Another ritualistic offer to the Goddess
is Thiri uzhichil and is performed after Thalappoli. In
Thiriuzhichil, the performer anoints the whole body by
himself in rhythmic manner using a wick lighted in vegetable
oil. All these functions finish by dawn. Then the sanctorum
is closed and the next day and night, Thottams are sung
in front of this sanctorum. |
| The third day
morning figures and pooja materials are removed. This
two-day session together is called a Kalam and is usually
conducted as an offering by any devotee. The Kalam offered
by the devotees usually held are in odd number. Only males
do these performances and pooja. The right for doing these
performances is vested on some specific families of Mannan
community and they are honoured with the titled 'Choppan'. |
 |
 |
These families
reside at a place called Iringavoor, which is about 6km
away from this Kavu. There is another Kavu at Iringavoor
where the deity is called Iringavoor Bhagavathy. This
Goddess is believed to be the sister of Ambalakkulangara
Bhagavathy. It is said that the festival is conducted
for Iringavoor Bhagavathy, in presence of Ambalakkulangara
Bhagavathy. There is a grand procession on the starting
day from Iringavoor to this Kavu along with Choppan as
the Oracle/Velichappadu that represents the Goddess. |
| The
procession starts by afternoon from Iringavoor, walks
all the way and reaches Ambalakkulangara by evening, then
starts the proceeding of 'Kalam'. By tradition,
the final day is usually celebrated by the local people
and the main attraction on this day is Kazcha varavu.
In this, people in groups arrive kavu by evening with
lot of folkforms, huge edifies of bullocks, traditional
drums and with fire dances. This performance lasts for
3-4 hours. Thalappoli is conducted after this. This is
called Nattu Thalappoli. For this, the full day Thottam
is conducted in advance (ie, one more day Thottam for
the previous Kalam). |
